Resolving Conflict Assignment Topic

In my essay I'm going to talk about the two ways that are the most popular for college students to get intimacy with one another: dating and hooking up. I'm going to give the cons and pros of each one, and why do I think people choose to do either one. I'm also going to talk about how things have changed, from our parents' time to nowadays. My essay is going to be specific to these situations for college students.

Section 3: courting, dating or just hooking up. For inquiry.

As a college student I strongly agree with authors Grime and English. Things have changed since our parents’ college days and it doesn’t seem that is a change for good. Dating is no longer seen as it used to, is no longer what most guys and some girls look for, at least in college. They don’t go out on dates anymore. As English said in her article: “The dinner-and-a-movie date is all but dead. Today, campus social life centers around skimpy outfits and strong drinks”. I think one of the reasons is because college students think that they have an entire life after college to look for a serious relationship, so, why waste your time now in committing to one person, if you can just have a good time by hooking up with as many as you want?
I keep thinking that guys are more interested in hooking up than girls are. Guys feel much cooler when they hook up with many girls, and think that they look better to their friends, and they probably do, but is not the same situation for girls. The first thing that a girl will damage if she hooks up with many different guys, is her reputation, they way guys and other girls will think about her. There are many girls that don’t really care about it, because they say that they are just enjoying life and doing whatever they feel like doing, and probably after college they are going to move back home, and no one there is going to know what they did or didn’t during their college life. Girls are also more likely to get hurt, because as English said, they are the ones that usually develop feelings for the other one.
Of course there are still some people that believe in the “old fashion” dating thing. Those are the ones that are probably going to have a more healthy relationship life as they get older, because once you get used to doing something, normally you stick to it, because it is really hard to change it. These people that still believe in dating, and are involved in a serious relationship are normally more mentally stable. They don’t have to go from person to person looking for some fun, but they just found their happiness in that given person they are with. So, there is still some hope that college students could realize the benefits of dating and make it as common in quotidian life as it used to be, as Grimes said in her article: “A culture only lasts as long as people are willing to live it”.

Favorite Song

I actually have many favorite songs, and they are changing throughout the time. But there are some that stay with me for a longer time, one of these is Patience, from Guns n' Roses. The song talks about how a couple need to have some patience and wait until they can be together. I like because I can relate that to every aspect of my life. I think that we need patience if we want to accomplish important things during life. There is absolutely no reason to rush anything, and I believe that patience is a great virtue. I don't have much, so, that's probably why I admire so much the ones that do have it.

Persepolis

I think Satrapi made her point of explaining how was life for them during this hard period, and everything that they, as citizens, had to go through. She explains how she was feeling during that time, and how she wanted to change everything by becoming a prophet. I think she was able to explain through her graphics what was the national tragedy about, but at least in the part that we got to read, it didn't say much about polital aspects.
I think Persepolis actually gained a lot by the use of black-and-white, it made me feel that it was appropiate it for the topic that she is talking about, and also the time period that is being talked. They are simple drawings, nothing really fancy, but she did a good job in making them so specific that we can get exactly what she is trying to tell us.
From the story i chose the frame in which she is reading her grandmother what are the rules that she is going to propose when she becomes a prophet. The author is being depicted as when she was a little girl and wanted to change the entire situation that her country was going through. The emotion that is being conveyed in this image is a mix of sadness and hope. Because is a sad situation the one that they are going through, but she keeps the hope that things can change, and that she can be the one in charge of making that happen. The text added to the picture is just an explanation of what she is reading to her grandmother, the things that she is going to do when she becomes a prophet. This picture exhibits sincerity from the little girl, because she is talking from the bottom of her heart, how does she feel about what is going on, and how she really wants to make it go away. The figure of this stage that remains stationary is the grandmother, since she is just seated listening to what her grandaughter has to tell her; and the one the one that implies action is the girl, that is trying to explain her thoughts. The purpose of this is to make sure that readers understand who is the one with the power in that frame, and why is everything turning around her in the story. I think there is no lack of sense nor realism. I consider it a very realistic image that tells us the entire purpose of the girl, and that fits perfectly with the rest of the story.

Editorial Cartoon

This cartoon is making fun of the way that cell phones are so essential in nowadays, that people actually prefers to be talking on the cell phone instead of talking to people around them. I think that is something that the use of cell phones is getting stronger year by year. Even kids have cell phones now, and some people are losing the ability to talk face to face and it can get worse with the advanced technology world that we live in. The invention of more developed cell phones is a threat to personal communication between people. Even in business now, people don't meet personally but they have long distance conferences using cell phones that can be used with videos too. But it is just the world we are living in and everyone is used to it, the use of cell phones will just continue to grow.

Across the Universe

The Strawberry Scene from "Across the Universe" illustrates how real things of life can be expressed by the use of abstracts symbols and colors. The strawberries used by him represent the blood spread out during the war, and it's a way of expressing the frustration of seeing something that you don't like and not being able to do anything about it to improve it and make it better. It is also representing the issues of life and relationships. The song goes along with the clip, and the way the strawberries are used then as bombs also demostrates the abstract use of the artist who demostrate his feeling by the use of his creativity.

eng lab most memorable image

I have seen a lot of thing that have caught my attention through out my life, but i can say that the one that just impressed me the most were the Pyramids of Egypt. It is hard to believe that they were built by men, considering their enormous size and their perfection. Being standing next to them made me realize how men working together can accomplish anything that they propose to. People from all over the world go to see them, and all of them have the same feeling about them, they are just something amazing, something that you don't see everyday and that will be hard or even impossible to replace or built something similar. The most interesting part is that they were built so many years ago, when the technology that we have nowadays didn't exist at all, and when men had to do it everything with their hands and using just their intelligence. The image of these Pyramids is something that is going to stay in my mind for the rest of my life.

eng lab III, photography

Photography

You do not have to been an expert or qualified photographer to take great pictures. All you need is your camera, of any kind, and an imagination. Sometimes, you do not even need a purpose when taking photographs. Some of the best photography is random because no expectations were put on any one specific picture. One of the neatest facts is that photography has been around for many years. They provide proof and evidence of the people living in the past, especially of relatives, loved ones, and of course, people who have made a difference in the world. We would all like to remember the people of importance somehow, and memory is not always reliable On the other hand, photographs will always paint a mental picture of that specific person. Photography is a fascinating way of portraying language and personal views without providing any words or oral documentation.
Have you ever heard the expression, pictures are worth a thousand words? Well, this famous expression is true to the core. One of the most emotional, intriguing photographs, in my opinion, is pictures of sufferers from other countries. The photographs of young children dying from thirst, hunger, or infectious illnesses affect me in such a way, that I feel my heart wanting to reach out to these children. Their eyes portray the sadness no other human being can exhibit, and their emaciated bodies need no explanation as to what is occurring. On a different note, nature photography, help the human mind visualize and appreciate Mother Earth, without any informative words being spoken. People can travel the world in their own or other people’s pictures. It’s as if they are explorers right at home, flipping through pages in National Geographic. The next time, you are in the mood to express to others your view of the world, just grab you camera, and start snapping away.

Martin Luther King's letter

I found the letter really convincent. His primary goal was to bring the country together again, and get rid of segregation of black people. The fact that he was in jail when we wrote the letter gives him a lot more credibility, because he is actually living the situation that he is trying to defend, and by giving some examples he makes it easier for people to understand his point of view and prove why he is right. I like the way he talks about the church, because even though he thinks that church is acting in a wrong way, he still says that he loves it, and that he still has some hope that it can change the way it is acting. I think it's a really insipirational example of how you need to stay with what you believe it's right, even if you have to suffer the consequences of doing it.

eng lab 103 II

I think it's important to have a clear idea of how an academic integrity pledge should be composed, and it's benefitial to us, as students, because we will be aware of what is required to make it through college life in an honest way that it will also serve us as an example of how we should act for the rest of our lives. And it's also important that we learn how to share these values with our peers.

Julius Ceasar

I think both speeches are similar in pathos wise, because they both get really emotional and they get to the people, making them believe what they are saying and try to get them to their side. And people actually do, for example when Brutus talked, they thought that Caesar died for a good reason, so everything was fine, but then when Antony started talking about how good of a person Ceasar was, people just wanted revenge against the ones that killed him.

Talking about logos, i think that Antony has more proves about what he was saying because he could explain them the reasons why he was a good person, and even showed them his will, and everything that he was leaving to them. But Brutus didn't have any proves to say that Ceasar was ambitious, he just said that he was and that's why he deserved to die.

About ethos, at the beginning Brutus' speech had a lot of moral credibility, because people thought that was an honorable man, so that's why they should trust him. But then after Ceaser's speech, they realized that they were actually against Ceasar's death, because he didn't deserve it.

eng lab 103

From this English lab class and in a student’s perspective, I would like to improve my ability of writing and reading at the same time. As in my case, English is not my first language, it would mean a lot to me if I could accomplish this goal, because it will not only help me in my English class, but also in the rest of my classes in my entire college and also in my personal life.

Writing is not something that I like really much, but I thing that this class can help me understand the actual meaning of doing it, and see it from a different perspective, which I think it could be very interesting. It can give it a meaning and maybe I will start writing just for a pleasure, as a way of getting things out, like I’ve heard so many people that do that, just to feel better and express themselves this way.

I know that is not an easy job, and that it will take a lot work from my part, during classes and also off classes, but I think that if I give my best effort I will be able to have a significant improvement in what I’m working on, and therefore, at the end of the semester, see this class as an actual success for what I was looking for at taking it. And I could also use some help from my classmates and professor, in making this possible.

Punctuation

"Punctuation as the basting that holds the fabric of language in shape". I totally agree with the author in this and many other quotes of her essay. I think punctuation is what actually gives meaning to any reading, is what helps us, as readers, to understand it better, and in an accurate way. A reading with an incorrect punctuation can change the whole meaning of it, and it can lose it's purpose.

Language makes reality

"Language not only has the ability to allocate political power for all of us as a society, but also is the means and the medium by which we construct and understand oursleves as individuals, as coherents creatures, and also as members of a culture, a cohesive unit".
This means that language can be everything that people need to be connected with each other, and for the entire world to become just one. Is not anything we can touch or feel, but it is more important that many of the things we actually can, because it can change it all around, everything can be improved by the correct use of language.
It is important to the author's argument because he talks about how language has a huge power, that can be used for good or for bad, but is up to people to decide how to use it.
